Jake Berenson

Fearless leader. Prince.

Once upon a time he'd hated both, hated the implications that came with them, the responsibility. The burden of leadership thrust upon the shoulder of a thirteen year-old boy who'd barely even begin to contemplate what his future might hold.

Out of every possibility, he hadn't expected the one he'd ended up in. The one where most days he was a prisoner in his own body. Where a monster drove him around and used him.

He had never expected to become a puppet.

Now...now he's give almost anything to hear either of those names said in the same way they once had.

Fearless leader, he could still recall Marco saying with a laugh. Marco who was in the same boat as him but perhaps better off. His Yeerk at least didn't seem like the psychopathic lunatic Jake had ended up with.

Prince Jake, he remembered Ax saying, with such pride in his thought-speak. Except now his image of Ax was of an Andalite grown, his resemblance to Elfangor so much stronger now, with all of his eyes full of hate. It wasn't for him, it was never for Jake but for Keelas, but it still hurt to see that rage turned towards him.

He couldn't do much of anything from his position - Keelas had devised a devilish way to keep him at heel like some trained hound - but he could resist. In whatever small way he could, he would resist.

Sub-Visser Three Keelas 112

Keelas 112 of the Sekol Kon Pool. The first of the name born beyond the skies of the Yeerk homeworld, born into silence and the Pool alone as an environment because there were not enough hosts for all who had escaped their planet before the Andalites had closed in.

Then sight, sound! Weak but present! A broken mind underneath its own, tempered into a willing and sedate host by those who had passed it on. There was not even enough left for it to recall its own name…but that was fine. Keelas found after its second host, the Hork-Bajir Warel Luhon, that it despised a host with a mind of its own.

Its method to breaking Warel involved orchestrating the escape of Zoh Nisev, a female he had feelings for. Keelas stepped in to stop her escape itself and reveled in Warel’s pain as it forced the Hork-Bajir to slay the one being he had grown to care for. After that, Warel was a willing participant if only because he had lost the will to fight against Keelas.

Keelas eventually fell under the command of the newly appointed Visser Three. It made a goal to make itself useful to the Visser, who would surely go far as the only Andalite-Controller within the ranks of the Empire at the time. Keelas became useful and showed both the full extent of its quick thinking as well as a ruthless regard for getting to its goal. It rode through the ranks and became a trusted lieutenant, eventually being granted the rank of Sub-Visser Twenty-Two.

Then it was gifted the Animorph.

Keelas was gleeful as it entered the boy, expecting a defeated foe. It found loss and sorrow but this child was willfully stubborn. Constantly attempting to morph while it had to feed and making attempts to take body parts back or just simply talking. Keelas first placed Hork-Bajir and Taxxons to guarding the boy but he was wise; he knew they would not kill the first of the captured Animorphs that had been such a thorn in Visser Three’s side.

It devised a different strategy then. Let the boy try his escape attempts and his testing of the prison. When he did, one of his family members would kill themself in front of him and Keelas would order the Yeerk to work through every member of the Berenson family until all of them were dead. The boy tested it once...and his father still bore the scar on his neck as a reminder. It had been disappointed with the fact that that was the only attempt. The boy’s pain would have been a beautiful thing.

Now it is Sub-Visser Three and the boy - now a man but Keelas will never call him such - is quiet. It knows he waits, waiting for what seems like the perfect time to rebel and resist what is his rightful place as a host. That is fine by Keelas.

It still looks forward to hearing the boy’s screams as his family dies.
